5 Critical Elements that Search Engines Use to Rank Your Page

Every page you create is another chance to get ranked.

Google uses over 100 factors to determine where to rank your website in the search results. Most of the algorithms are closely guarded SEO secrets. Here are just a few.

  1. The age of your domain name.
  2. Is your site mobile friendly?
  3. How many sites link to your site?
  4. What is the popularity (or page rank) of the sites that link to your site?

The 5 most important “SEO best practices” you should adhere to when creating a web page are listed below.

The Title Tag, the URL and the Meta Description are critical to Seach Engine Optimization

1. PAGE TITLE

Google scores your page heavily on the Page Title. While the contents of your Title Tag are not displayed on your website, the first 55-65 characters of the Title are shown to the public in Search Results. Every page should have a unique title.

Summary: 10 words MAX in your Title Tag – no duplicate titles on your site.

2. URL

The URL can (and should) contain keywords. Example, if your page is about Good Year Tires the URL should reflect that http://www.bce.com/good-year-tires or even better http://www.bce.com/racing/tires/good-year/

Summary: The URL of every page should contain the keywords you are targeting.

3. DESCRIPTION

“Meta” descriptions (their technical term) can be any length, but search engines generally truncate snippets longer than 160 characters. It is best to keep meta descriptions between 150 and 160 characters.

Summary: The description should summarize what the viewer will read when they get to that page on your site.

The Headline and Body Content are Critical to Search Engine Optimization

4. HEADLINE

The HEADLINE should closely resemble the TITLE with your key-words included. Both can be identical, but should vary slightly.

Summary: HEADLINE and TITLE should include the same keywords.

5. CONTENT

The text in the body of your page (the content) should contain keywords. Bold each keyword once MAX 3 keywords per page. Good practice to link to another page on your site.

Summary: Write content to include bolded keywords and links to other pages on your site (max 1 link every 100 words.)

In conclusion, follow these simple SEO Rules and always write quality content for your target audience - consider what they might be searching for.
